More you see, less you know.

If some day you decide to visit Shanghai, then you should plan a day stage to discover the probably most obscure building of whole China in the towns Hongkou (Hongkew) District that nowadays is known as SHANGHAI 1933 – without preparing that visit with a previous literature study about the buildings characteristics, architecture and history.

Not knowing „OLD MILLFUN“ from the outset might generate an even more strong, ice-cold shiver that runs down from your neck over your whole backside until your feet when you walk over the unique-grey cement stairways and passwalks, its 26 bridges, when you climb up to its 5th upper floor, when you nearly get lost inside the central circle-round towers halls that are connected with the surrounding parts of the building by numerous bridges, or when you join playing the game „ROOM ESCAPE“ in its cellar decorated like a theater requisite and wardrobe.

Knowing singular architecture from other towns of the world one would think, that SHANGHAI 1933 was designed as religious styled horror theater for Shakespeare & Hitchcock dramaturgies inspired by Antonio Gaudi´s design of buildings that own a proper life, that seem still growing organically and that might swallow it´s visitors in some of its darker corners. Nevertheless, dozens of other visitors, restaurants and cafeterias, artcraft stores, a music-hall and numerous digital design shops as well as marriage organizers occupy the most space of the bulding so that the unprepared visitor never feels alone and is able to recue itself from the dreadful surrounding inside a contemporary tourist shop.

Having seen OLD MILLFUN you probably won´t believe any more the current informations that you find, when you search in Internet for the initial reasons of the architecture, it´s builders and its users. The building distinguishes from most of all worldwide known slaughterhouses constructed as industrial meat production factories by his 5 floors and by his cathedral- or Roman Basilica-like decoration elements and the bridges that connect the inner and outer buildings over the internal courts, reminding by that aspect to the architecture of some traditional asian temple sites.

SHANGHAI 1933 was designed by the british architect Balfours, without detailing if the latter was Eustace, Andrew or another representant of that british family, and erected in 1933 by the Yu Hongji Construction Company with funds provided by the Shanghai Municipal Council. It´s initial functioning as slaughterhouse was closed down in 2002 and in 2008 it was renewed or 100 Million Renminbi as modern cultural hotspot. The main functional building for animal slaugthering is surrounded by several other similar styled constructions as for example the Cremation Building and connected by a system of channels with the Huangpu River for cattle transport on ships.

Shanghai 1933 you can reach with a relaxed walking from the northeastern BUND, crossing the forged iron WAIBAIDU Bridge walking towards northeast along the CHANGZHI ROAD until the channel bridge and then turning to the north (left) walking along the watercourse over LIYANG or JIULONG ROAD until the HAINING ROAD Bridge where you reach after having covered a track of 1.500 meters the old building complexes.
